INNOVATION IN STEM
The International STEM Students’ Forum provides a platform for STEM students and teachers in higher education from different parts of the world to exchange knowledge and innovative ideas.

This year’s theme, “Innovation in STEM”, the forum aims to inspire younger generation by exploring emerging career trends in the exciting world of STEM and encouraging more young women to pursue STEM studies and careers through diversified activities including joint project presentation and showcase, industry visit and panel discussion on trends and opportunities in STEM to nurture the next generation of STEM leaders.

Vocational Training Council
Established in 1982, the Vocational Training Council (VTC) is the largest vocational and professional education and training provider in Hong Kong. VTC provides valuable credentials for some 200,000 students each year through a full range of pre-employment and in-service programmes with internationally recognised qualifications.

VTC draws strength from the number of Member Institutions, breadth of programmes and variety of accredited qualifications to provide a new world of OPPORTUNITIES to learners of all ages and abilities. VTC STEM Education Centre
Located in IVE (Tsing Yi), IVE (Chai Wan) and Youth College (Kowloon Bay), the VTC STEM Education Centre, furnished with advanced teaching and learning facilities, provides simulated workplace training as well as a cross-disciplinary learning platform for VTC students. A number of multi-disciplinary projects co-developed by VTC students and teachers showcase at the Centre, covering the topics about artificial intelligence, design and making of smart robots for real-life applications.

Prof Eric MA Siu Cheung, GBS, JP

Prof Ma is the Chief Executive Officer of NWS Holding Limited. Before such, he was the Acting CEO of the Hong Kong Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park Limited and Principal Consultant of the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation. Prof Ma joined the Government of the HKSAR in 2014 as the Under Secretary for Development and was subsequently appointed as the Secretary for Development. During his tenure, he oversaw policy areas ranging from urban planning to heritage conservation, with a focus on addressing the supply-demand imbalance for land and housing. Prior to working at the Government of the HKSAR, Prof Ma was the Executive Vice-President for Civil and Infrastructure Business (Asia Pacific) of AECOM Asia Company Limited.

He is a fellow member of several professional bodies, including the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He is an Honorary Professor of the Department of Real Estate and Construction, Faculty of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong and an Adjunct Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Construction and Environment of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof Ma was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 2014 and was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2017 by the Government of the HKSAR.

Mrs Vivian CHEUNG

Mrs Cheung holds a Master degree of Business Administration from Southern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Computer Science degree from State University of New York. Mrs Cheung is an alumni of the Stanford Executive Program from the Stanford University. She was appointed Executive Director, Airport Operations in December 2019. Mrs Cheung worked for the General Electric Company and a high tech startup in the Silicon Valley for many years before joining the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) in 1992. With more than 27 years of experience in airport management, she has held a number of senior management positions in the AAHK. Mrs Cheung is currently a Director of Hong Kong – Zhuhai Airport Management Company Limited and Vice Chairman of Shanghai Hong Kong Airport Management Company Limited. Active in community service, she is a member of the Liaison Panel for Accreditation of Vocational and Professional Education and Training of Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, and a member of Board of Directors of Support! International Foundation.

Mr Eric CHONG

Mr. Eric Chong currently serves as President and CEO of Siemens Ltd. since 2011, leading the overall strategy in the areas of electrification, automation and digitalization and delivering sustainable solutions for infrastructure, energy and industry in Hong Kong and Macao.

Mr. Chong is currently the deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Business Environment Council (BEC) and is serving as the Chair of Climate Change Business Forum Advisory Group under BEC dedicated to promoting the awareness of Climate Change among businesses. He also serves as the Board Member of the Construction Innovation and Technology Application Centre (CITAC), the member of Cyberport Advisory Panel (CAP) as well as the member of the Product Promotion Programme Committee (PPPC) of Hong Kong Trade Development Council. As a senior executive for more than 20 years, Mr. Chong has worked at various countries in Asia, including 10 years in China.

Mr Thomas HO

Mr Thomas Ho, JP, is the Chief Executive of Gammon Construction Limited, a Hong Kong based construction group with operations throughout China and South-East Asia, jointly owned by Jardines and Balfour Beatty. Gammon has a turnover of around USD2.5 Billion and employs over 5000 professional staff.

Thomas possesses over 30 years of experience in construction industry. He has been dedicated to spearheading project management and general management, safety initiatives and innovation excellence in the construction industry. He is very active in community services and professional institutes’ services and is recognized by the Industry as the figurehead in promoting Excellence in Construction Management and Quality Construction. His passion and commitment in pursuing safety in the workplace, as demonstrated in the series of CEO Safety Forum for which he pulls together the efforts of government officials and industry leaders, is applauded by all stakeholders. Thomas was the Chairman of CITAC which serve to develop the Centre to be the knowledge hub and to demonstrate local application. It is also the intention of the Centre to promote Innovation Culture within the Industry and Community at large.

Mr Rick TRUSCOTT

Mr. Truscott has served as the Chief Operating Officer of CLP Power Hong Kong since 2017 and has more than 29 years of experience in the power industry with previous roles in development, financing, construction, operations and maintenance. He joined the CLP Group in 1999 as Business Development Manager for Southeast Asia, and was later appointed Senior Vice President for CLP Southeast Asia. In CLP Power Hong Kong, he has lead the Power Systems and the Generation businesses. Before joining the CLP Group, Mr. Truscott led development, acquisition and financing efforts for power projects in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. He previously served as an officer onboard the submarine USS Whale in the US Navy.

Mr Emil CHAN

Emil is a FinTech evangelist with over 20 years banking and IT experience. He is the Founding Chairman of the Association of Cloud and Mobile Computing Professionals, The FinTech Committee Chairman of the Smart City Consortium, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong New Emerging Technology Education Association, Supervisory Committee Member of iProA and the Honorary Chairman of StartHK. He is also a mentor of the HK Cyberport Mentors Network, Guangzhou CP-Nest Incubator of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Judge of the HK ICT Startup Award 2019. In order to unleash Hong Kong's potential and play a new role in the Greater Bay Area, Emil also hosts seminars, delivers public speeches and publishes articles of FinTech related topics on local newspapers and interviewed by various media from time to time. Last but not least, he shares his experience to the younger generations as the adjunct professor, visiting lecturer as well as advisor of various departments of local universities including HKU, PolyU, CityU, Hang Seng U, Lingnan U and VTC.

Dr Abraham LAM

Dr Abraham Lam is the co-founder of MEGA Automation Ltd. and Shenzhen FUSQUARE Technology Ltd. He acquired his Ph.D from the Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). His research interests include human-building interaction, human comfort, energy conservation and sustainability. He is a technopreneur and is keen on applying cutting-edge technologies to built environment, and has been interviewed frequently by many media in Hong Kong and mainland China for his excellence in both academia and industry. Dr Lam also devoted himself to serve in various social activities, he is the board member of several incorporated management committee (IMC) of primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens. In 2018, he was awarded the Greater Bay Area Young Leader, to affirm his role and contributions to the youths and social development, and elected the outstanding alumni award in 2019 by the department of computing, PolyU to recognize his outstanding performance and excellent leadership.

Dr Cathy N.P. LUI

Dr. Cathy N.P. Lui has found her passion in biomedical science since she was studying her Bachelor’s degree in HKBU. She decided to specialize in Neuroscience, obtaining a PhD degree from HKBU and continued her research in Northwestern University, U.S with a post-doctoral fellowship granted by American Parkinson’s Disease Association. Beginning as an academic researcher in her early career, Dr. Lui has the ambition to transform herself to positively impact her technology careers as an entrepreneur in biotechnology. Currently, Dr. Lui is the CEO of OPER Technology Limited. Her biotech startup is widely recognized in both academic and commercial field, attaining more than 36 awards worldwide. She has been recently named as one of the ten honorees of MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 for Asia Pacific, the young achiever of 2019 from Amcham as well as the GBA outstanding young woman entrepreneur in 2019.

Miss Joanna KWOK

Joanna is a chief engineer in Anglo Eastern Ship Management (AESM), a Hong Kong based company managing nearly 900 ships. She has been sailing on AESM managed cargo vessels since she began her career. She has also been sailing on various ships including bulk carrier, general cargo vessel, crude oil tanker and container vessel. She looks after the ship’s engine, repairing and maintaining all machinery and electrical appliances on board.

She was the first woman engineer hired by AESM, she started as an engine cadet after her completion of the Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education in 2008. She gained her class three, two, one license in 2008, 2014 and 2019 respectively and was promoted as Second Engineer in 2016. In 2019, she became the first woman in Hong Kong to qualify as a chief engineer of seagoing vessels.

Mr Damon WONG

Senior Programmer,
Computer and Technologies Holdings Limited,

Damon is a senior programmer working in Computer and Technologies Holdings Limited, a software development house in Cyberport, Hong Kong. His responsibilities include developing management systems for corporate clients and government departments.

He achieved his BSc (Hon) Information Technology at the University of the West of England (Bristol) in 2017 following his Higher Diploma in Cloud and Data Centre Administration at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocation Education. While studying for Bachelor programme, he participated in the ISSF 2017 where he presented his final year project on a Smart Bus Stop. He joined the Kowloon Motor Bus 1933 (KMB) as an IT Officer immediately after graduation. He continued to improve on the Smart Bus Stop system and contributed in other IT applications for buses. Later, he moved on to his current position where he expands his technical experience to projects such as human resources management systems and environmental inspection management systems.

Miss Jodie HOWLETT

Young Graduate Trainee for Process Performance Analysis and Quality,
European Space Agency,

Jodie is a Young Graduate Trainee for Process Performance Analysis and Quality at the European Space Agency (ESA), working at their mission control centre in Germany. Prior to this, she completed the interdisciplinary Space Studies Program at the International Space University in France.

In 2019, Jodie graduated with First Class (Hons) from Sheffield Hallam University (United Kingdom), where she studied MEng Mechanical Engineering. During her degree, she completed internships/placements in the UK, Singapore and South Africa, working in aerospace and biomedical industries.

She has held several board positions in order to improve opportunities for STEM students (e.g. with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)), and was listed in the UK’s Top 50 Women in Engineering in 2017.

Dr Timothy SHUEN

Research Manager and Research Fellow,
National Cancer Centre Singapore,

Timothy is the research manager of a US$20 million cancer immunotherapy research programme in Singapore and is concurrenly the research fellow in National Cancer Centre Singapore. Recently, he has received the Young Investigator Award by the World Immunotherapy Council (WIC) as well as awarded AMED-A*STAR (Japan-Singapore) joint grant to lead a cell therapy project as young principal investigator.

He finished his Higher Diploma in Analytical Sciences and Biotechnology at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. With the generous support by the Alistair Harvey Foundation Scholarship, Timothy continued his studies in UK and obtained first class honour and distinction for Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Master of Research in Molecular Biology, respectively. Before moving to Singapore, he did his PhD in Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong and received 4 scholarships and awards within 3-year of the PhD.

Miss Riikka SIHVONEN

Support Engineer,
Cisco Systems, Inc.

Finland
Riikka is currently a support engineer at Cisco, and has over 10 years of experience in the area of LAN/WAN, specializing in Cisco routing and switching. She has gained five Cisco certifications at professional and associate levels. Her current role involves building, testing, and supporting lab environments.

She attained her Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, ICT from Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland in 2012. She was introduced to the Cisco Networking Academy in her first year of studies. She began her career in various IT support and data centre technician roles.

She is keen to share her knowledge and learn from others. She has been an active member of the Cisco community. Her contribution awarded her the recognition of the first female Cisco Designated VIP on Cisco Learning Network and the honour of Cisco VIP for 2014, 2015 and 2016. She is committed to keeping on top of new technologies and advancing her career in ICT. She is currently studying for the expert level Cisco certification.

Miss Imogen STEVENSON

Regional Product Development Manager (Distributed Energy Systems),

Imogen is currently a Regional Product Development Manager (Distributed Energy Systems) at Siemens in the UK. After working closely with Siemens whilst studying for her Master programme in Mechanical Engineering (Control Systems) at the University of Lincoln, she graduated with Distinction in 2015 and took up a graduate position for Siemens. She rotated around departments for the following 2 years and undertook a wide range of roles in Small Gas Turbine products.

On completion of the scheme she started a role in Technical Support, for global Gas Turbine fleet. After a year she joined the Distributed Energy Team which focuses on Siemens Gas Engines in the UK & Ireland. The projects executed in her team include assets such as photovoltaics (solar) and wind turbines; she provides the service element for the project installations.

She is proud to work in a division where sustainability is a core value. Her distinguished work at Siemens awarded her a Siemens silver champions award in the ‘excellence’ category for a product improvement (The award received a nomination at business sector level in the UK). She also holds an active STEM ambassador role supporting awareness of engineering roles to children in local schools.
